You Should Watch ‘This Is The End’

” I don’t wanna die at James Franco’s house”

Real-life bros movies seem to be a genre that never disappoints – even if I just made up that genre. When the actors have a good relationship off-screen, the chemistry transcends the film. Just think of the Avengers movies, or anything that has at least two members of the Pitt-Clooney-Damon combo. It’s always just the actors using different names, but you can tell it’s them.

vlcsnap-2014-04-28-20h40m42s174This is the End is an overlooked movie, when it is hilarious, smart and witty. It stars James Franco, Seth Rogen (who also directs and writes the script), Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride. And this time they are not even trying to be a character: they are playing themselves. Well, exaggerated versions of themselves, with a Franco that keeps talking about art and his love for Rogen, an extra-nice Hill and an anarchist McBride.

The premise is nuts: the Rapture arrives while Franco is throwing a party, so the six main stars are stuck in his house after all the other guests die sucked by a hell hole – except for Michael Cera, who is killed by a lamppost. It is pointless to explain the plot from that moment on, but it is enough to know that the good vibes and the talent of these actors are enough to carry the movie, with lines such as “Dear God, it’s me, Jonah Hill… from Moneyball” or “Seth, that’s some of the better acting than I’ve seen in your last six movies. Where the fuck was that in Green Hornet?”

This movie is their Ocean’s Eleven, only with more drugs and dirty references. This is the End is actually a good film, probably better than some that are just assumed to be good. Give this one a chance and it will not disappoint.

“Emma, it’s me! Jonah Hill, America’s sweetheart”

Also, the ending scene is priceless. Anyone born in the mid-late eighties will be thrilled. The most surrealistic, yet perfect way to end a surrealistic movie.

Expect delightful cameos by Channing Tatum, Paul Rudd or Aziz Ansari.

By the way, if that’s the plot of the Pineapple Express sequel, I will give them money to make that happen if they need it.

If you are wondering when have these actors worked together before, check this slideshow. Most of these movies and TV shows are referenced throughout This is the End.

I will also take this chance to show you the trailer of 22 Jump Street. I could not stop laughing with the first movie and I feel like I will also love this one. What can I say, I like silent films, musicals AND this type of movies (Judd Apatow is a comedy genius).
